avenyou offers a new mobile shopping experience for online shops. With its ecommerce applications for mobile devices, users can flexibly browse through the different shops. avenyou acts as a modern “search engine” and significantly simplifies shopping in numerous online shops. The users can discover new shops and subscribe to news from their favorite shops. Furthermore, it also includes additional services that come in handy when shopping. We interviewed the team on the idea behind avenyou, its founding period, and future prospects.
What does your company stand for?
avenyou helps customers experience online shops anew. We make it easier to browse through the various shops and their social media channels. Customers remain up-to-date and thanks to avenyou, do not miss out on offers or new collections of their favorite shops. We also help customers discover new shops that match their preferences.
Where and how did you get this brilliant idea?
There is no single place or specific time. We are engineers, we observe and draw conclusions Our business idea is based on the observation that we currently find ourselves in a paradigm shift of terms in the use of internet contents. The Web as we know it, with websites and browsers, is continuously becoming more uninteresting with the rapid proliferation of smartphones and tablets. Optimized applications for mobile devices and their application contexts, which replace search engines and personalize contents, do exist in a few domains already. Feedly and Flipboard are examples of such Apps in the news field, the Tapatalk app offers easy access to the favorite internet forums and the Spotify and SoundCloud apps make it possible to listen and discover new music. In our opinion, a great solution in the ecommerce field is yet to be found in order to personalize the diversity that comes with the many online shops and optimize it for mobile use.
How did your founding team come together?
We all earned our doctorate in Software Design & Quality (SDQ) under Prof. Reussner and therefore knew each other very well. Since we all wanted to establish something of our own, it was not that hard to form a team.
What would you say are the benefits of being your own boss?
It is very important to make quick decisions in the implementation of a vision that does not yet exist in that particular form. Being your own boss is hereby advantageous. And it is also a lot of fun.
What do you think are the properties that one should have to be a successful entrepreneur?
Courage, self-confidence, diligence, perseverance.
What would you term as the hurdles on the way to a successful business? Where did you get support?
The greatest hurdle is certainly implementing our vision in such a manner that avenyou will be seen as the ultimate shopping platform for our users. One of the things that is hereby helpful is the feedback we get from our users. In addition, one mostly needs contacts and experience from the corporate structure field and the corresponding domains – that was also the case with us. We were greatly assisted by the Center for Entrepreneurship (CIE), the CyberForum as well as Michael Rausch, Carsten Urbanski and Prof. Reussner who mentored us. The question of finance is also one thing that accompanied us from the beginning and that is currently on the agenda again.
How did you deal with the large workloads during start-up?
Since we were doctoral students at KIT, we are already used to having to work a lot. The main challenge is however not the workload but in efficient organization and working with a target-oriented mindset.
Do you have any advice for other young entrepreneurs?
Be courageous and feel free to simply do it. Just like John Wayne said: “Courage is being scared to death… and saddling up anyway.”
