The spin-off Renumics GmbH uses machine learning methods to make Computer Aided Engineering more efficient and take the strain off computational engineers.
Crash tests are an expensive affair. In early development stages, collision experiments are therefore often replaced by computer simulations that can be performed thousands of times taking various influential factors into account. These simulations are usually based on computer-supported processes, on so-called Computer Aided Engineering (CAE). This concept centres on computational engineers who compile numerical models, thus assisting constructors in the analysis and optimisation of their designs. The crucial time and cost factors here are the many manual work steps involved. For example, computational engineers invest a considerable amount of time in routine activities such as pre-processing geometries and integrating data instead of being able to concentrate on modelling and analytical work, which is precisely where Renumics comes in. This KIT spin-off has developed a software with which CAE can be automated. In this context, machine learning methods help make simulations workflows considerably more efficient.

In 2016, the CeBIT was once again held in Hanover with strong participation by KIT. This year’s motto of the event, “Discover d!conomy – the digital transformation has arrived!”, explored the question of how digital technologies will simplify business processes and everyday life in the future. The main topics were “Big Data”, “Cloud”, “Internet of Things”, “Mobile”, “Industry 4.0” and “Work 4.0”.
Especially the large number of KIT spin-offs clearly demonstrated the position of the Institute in research and the transfer of knowledge between society and the business world. A total of eleven start-up teams from KIT and one FZI team took the opportunity to present their products and services to a broad audience and discuss solutions to current changes with the trade fair visitors.

KITcrowd – Crowdfunding for startups
As part of the Founders Forge, the KIT already offers students and scientific employees a wide array of offerings for startup promotion, for instance with consulting, coaching, and seminars. In March, we launched the KIT crowdfunding platform KITcrowd in order to offer KIT founders an additional financing opportunity. Since the launch of the platform, six startup projects and startups have presented themselves. Three of these were successful and able to advance their ideas. More about KITcrowd
A motive for KIT startup teams at upCAT
Twice a year, prospective founders have the opportunity to intensely work on their startup at the KIT accelerator upCAT. An initial idea develops into a concrete business model in three months – supported by entrepreneurial know-how, coaches, and mentors. The Demo Day in March was a complete success. All teams were able to excite the audience of investors and network partners and received valuable feedback on their business cases. On December 7th, 2014, the next round of upCAT will begin! On 10/06/2015, the practice-oriented event “From Invention to Innovation” for professional patent management for employees of the KIT was held again in cooperation with the Center for Advanced Technical and Environmental Training (FTU). Fourteen participants came together to receive advanced training on the topics of protection of intellectual property and technology utilization. The KIT Innovation Department (IMA) presented the services for transfer of technology at the KIT.
The half-day events of the program for advanced training (Wissensaufbau und Technologietransfer – Knowledge building and transfer of technology) of the KIT Founders Forge are directed toward inventions that can develop through protection, e.g., in the form of patents ranging to commercialization. Innovations are thus created via an orderly and stringent process that is accompanied by the IMA. Inventions find their way into the economy in the form of technology transfer projects, startups, and the related license agreements. Due to the special circumstances, a separate seminar component is devoted to the transfer of technology in spin-offs. A wide array of services as well as partners and specialists are presented on this topic. Thus, the participants receive a first view of the founding scene at the KIT, the challenges when starting a business, and an initial “gut feeling” of whether they could actually imagine founding their own company. The event was once again topped off with a get-together to discuss individual questions with contact partners of IMA.

Twice a year, technology-oriented startup projects from universities and research institutions may apply for funding through EXIST Transfer of Research. With this funding program, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) supports outstanding teams of founders whose technology-based startup ideas require elaborate development work. The goal is to improve the startup climate at universities and research institutions as well as to increase the number of technological and scientific business startups.
In May 2015, the jury met and decided on the submissions from the January 2015 application phase. Altogether, 87 sketched ideas from around Germany were examined. Twenty-six startup teams from the areas of life sciences, energy technology, sensor technology, software, and industry 4.0 won the jury over and received approval for funding. Among them are three teams from the KIT: GIn, OTEGO, and Emmtrix. Congratulations!
The team of GIn – Gesture Interaction for Wearable Technologies has specialized in the area of augmented reality (AR). Using newly developed technology for gesture interaction, the aim is to considerably expand and improve the input options and the range of functions of AR glasses and ‘wearable devices’. The OTEGO team is working on a spin-off in the energy sector. With thermoelectric generators (TEGs), they hope to transform ambient heat directly into power when a temperature change occurs. The technology can be applied in a wide array of markets. The third startup project, Emmtrix, develops a software solution for programming multicore processors for simplifying the parallelization of embedded systems in the industry field.
These entirely different ideas were rated by the BMWi as technologically demanding and economically promising startup projects. With the help of EXIST Transfer of Research, the teams can now focus on continuing to develop, proving the technical feasibility, and preparing the startup. We wish the three teams a lot of success and will follow their development!
