The spin-off Renumics GmbH uses machine learning methods to make Computer Aided Engineering more efficient and take the strain off computational engineers.
Crash tests are an expensive affair. In early development stages, collision experiments are therefore often replaced by computer simulations that can be performed thousands of times taking various influential factors into account. These simulations are usually based on computer-supported processes, on so-called Computer Aided Engineering (CAE). This concept centres on computational engineers who compile numerical models, thus assisting constructors in the analysis and optimisation of their designs. The crucial time and cost factors here are the many manual work steps involved. For example, computational engineers invest a considerable amount of time in routine activities such as pre-processing geometries and integrating data instead of being able to concentrate on modelling and analytical work, which is precisely where Renumics comes in. This KIT spin-off has developed a software with which CAE can be automated. In this context, machine learning methods help make simulations workflows considerably more efficient.

On 29 June 2016, KIT organised the third KIT Venture Fest. This year’s Innovation Day attracted more than 700 to the premises around Audimax: a new visitor record. The diverse programme brought together students, employees and entrepreneurs based at KIT with representatives from industry and business, investors and networking partners. Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board at Daimler AG, was the highlight of the event with his late-night talk.

Everything starts with a clever idea. Be that a business idea that will form the foundation for a later start-up or a new technology, developed within the scope of an academic project. Frequently, such an idea constitutes an invention with real market potential. In this case, it is recommended to protect the “intellectual property” by way of an industrial patent, for instance.
Prototypes are a thing of the past. With the software platform “Cross Connected” from Rüdenauer 3D Technology GmbH, mechatronic processes can be simulated and visualized in real-time as high-end 3D graphics. This makes it possible for businesses to virtually develop and optimize machine and system solutions and to experience these solutions interactively. The software can be used in the areas of product development, e-learning, sales, and service. In an interview, we asked Rüdenauer 3D Technology about the idea, startup time, and future prospects.

Despite an innovative business idea, the path to independence isn’t always easy. During the beginning stage of a startup, the main focus lies on the issue of financing as well as on searching for suitable spaces for realizing this idea.
