What is already standard in desktop computers and laptops is increasingly applied in the area of embedded systems, such as telecommunication devices, automotive electronics or industrial control systems: Processors of two or more processor cores for higher speed and enhanced computing power. The higher performance of multi-core processors compared to single-core processors is only reached, if the tasks are distributed appropriately to several processor cores in an efficient and problem-free manner. So far, such a parallelization has been accomplished manually: This is very time-consuming, cost intensive and requires special programming knowledge.
A team of scientists of from the KIT Institute for Information Processing Technology (ITIV) headed by Professor Jürgen Becker started to look for solutions to simplify parallelization of multi-core processors already in 2011. Within the framework of the EU project “Algorithm Parallelization for Multi-core Architectures“ (ALMA), the scientists, in cooperation with industry partners, developed an innovative programming environment. The computer scientists and electrical engineers Dr.-Ing. Timo Stripf, Michael Rückauer and Oliver Oey were part of this research team. Based on the software tool developed in ALMA, they decided to start their own company. “About 40 person-years had been spent for the development. When the project was completed, we decided to start a company to make the technology available for the industry,” Timo Stripf explains.
For five KIT teams, everything revolves around advancing their startup project. They are taking part in the upCAT#4, a 12-week intensive program for startups and spin-offs. This is where prospective startup teams work on accelerating their market entry. The fourth KIT accelerator is lead by Dr. Gerda Frank and Petra Nitschke from the Center for Interdisciplinary Entrepreneurship (CIE).
Together with internal and external speakers, they share startup-relevant knowledge and a variety of methods that can be directly used in the following practice and mentoring sessions. The teams receive additional tips from experts in the industry and economy, so-called mentors. From December 7th-10th, 2015, the kickoff week took place – the start of the program. For one week, the teams received input in order to specify their business ideas. We met the teams at the beginning of the program.
The advent season rings in the end of a year – a good time to “decelerate” everyday life and to indulge in a review of the past year. We look back at the lovely, collective, and educational events of 2015.
KITcrowd – Crowdfunding for startups
As part of the Founders Forge, the KIT already offers students and scientific employees a wide array of offerings for startup promotion, for instance with consulting, coaching, and seminars. In March, we launched the KIT crowdfunding platform KITcrowd in order to offer KIT founders an additional financing opportunity. Since the launch of the platform, six startup projects and startups have presented themselves. Three of these were successful and able to advance their ideas. More about KITcrowd
A motive for KIT startup teams at upCAT
Twice a year, prospective founders have the opportunity to intensely work on their startup at the KIT accelerator upCAT. An initial idea develops into a concrete business model in three months – supported by entrepreneurial know-how, coaches, and mentors. The Demo Day in March was a complete success. All teams were able to excite the audience of investors and network partners and received valuable feedback on their business cases. On December 7th, 2014, the next round of upCAT will begin! On 10/06/2015, the practice-oriented event “From Invention to Innovation” for professional patent management for employees of the KIT was held again in cooperation with the Center for Advanced Technical and Environmental Training (FTU). Fourteen participants came together to receive advanced training on the topics of protection of intellectual property and technology utilization. The KIT Innovation Department (IMA) presented the services for transfer of technology at the KIT.
The half-day events of the program for advanced training (Wissensaufbau und Technologietransfer – Knowledge building and transfer of technology) of the KIT Founders Forge are directed toward inventions that can develop through protection, e.g., in the form of patents ranging to commercialization. Innovations are thus created via an orderly and stringent process that is accompanied by the IMA. Inventions find their way into the economy in the form of technology transfer projects, startups, and the related license agreements. Due to the special circumstances, a separate seminar component is devoted to the transfer of technology in spin-offs. A wide array of services as well as partners and specialists are presented on this topic. Thus, the participants receive a first view of the founding scene at the KIT, the challenges when starting a business, and an initial “gut feeling” of whether they could actually imagine founding their own company. The event was once again topped off with a get-together to discuss individual questions with contact partners of IMA.

OPASCA has specialized in the development of intelligent, sensor-based systems and solutions for environment detection. On the basis of a diverse and flexible platform concept, customer-tailored solutions are realized in the areas of person and object detection for a large range of applications. The technology is used primarily in the field of radiotherapy. The focus lies on the wellbeing of patients and the support of the professional staff. In an interview, we asked the team of OPASCA about the idea, the startup time, and the future prospects.
